Sexuality Road

Sexuality Road – Discovering Me Information

Sexuality education is part of the New Zealand Curriculum, and it is a requirement that it is taught as part of the Health and Physical Education learning area from years 1-10. The purpose of sexuality education is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to develop positive attitudes towards sexuality, to take care of their sexual health, and to enhance their interpersonal relationships, now and in the future.

Sexuality education is taught every second year at Berkley.  We use the family planning resource entitled, The Sexuality Road- Discovering me, to support the delivery of a sexuality education programme, previously known as positive puberty.

This unit will start in Term 4. Before teaching each topic, an outline of the lesson will be glued into the agenda book and posted on here. This is so you know what is happening in the class and it may help you be prepared/ give you advanced notice for any questions, comments and/or discussions your students may come home with.

Lesson 1 – Setting The Scene
Pre Unit Delivery

LESSON CONTENT:
Learners will:
1.   Develop a working agreement for use throughout the unit.
2.   Complete a pre-unit assessment, forming a baseline of current knowledge.
3.   Understand the purpose of the ‘Question Box’ and its role in providing a
     safe forum for asking questions.

IMPORTANT MESSAGES:
• To get the most out of sexuality education, it is each individual’s responsibility to ensure that they play their part in creating and maintaining a safe environment.
• For people to feel safe, we must ensure that we respect and encourage each other. This means listening to varying points of view and accepting that we are all individuals with different opinions, values, and beliefs. Having a diverse classroom means that there will be many opportunities for learning and for gaining insight into the ways other people think and live.

Student Report Contribution

As part of your end of year report, you need to contribute a short 60-80 word summary of your achievements, highlights, goals and growth this year. This can include information about Room 20, at tech, teaming, extra-curricular activities and any other school related activity. You could mention your academic achievements/goals, your attitude/learner profile development, and things you have been involved in.

You need to draft these into your assessment book. Then you need to copy and paste them into the correct table here.

Some examples are below.

Berkley’s motto is ‘take up the challenge’. Although I am only a year seven, I have taken up many challenges over the year, such as lunchtime promotions like badminton and gymnastics. Some highlights for me were Aongatete camp because there were lots of exciting challenges for me to experience and I learnt a lot about my classmates. Something I really enjoyed doing was the focus because it meant testing my mind to remember my lines. Berkley has helped me a lot with my writing and answering questions with more detail.
At the start of the year I was as nervous and knew no one, but as the terms went by, little by little I made some awesome friends and I can’t wait to be a year eight!

Our school motto is “take up the challenge” I can say that is exactly what I’ve done this year.  This is my first year at intermediate and so far I’ve been apart of so many things that I’ve lost count. Some of the ones I’m most proud of are: Being two main parts in the focus, being entered in the Otago maths, and entering two ICAS tests.
My highlights of this year were camp because I was challenged to succeed to my best ability. Also I loved being a host at information evening because I felt so important as always with my leadership roles.
This year I’ve worked on being a risk-taker, as I’m sometimes afraid to try new things.  I’ve done this by putting myself out there and giving it a go.  I’ve made special friends that I hope to continue my Berkley adventure with.  Berkley has helped me become the part of me I thought wasn’t there.
I look forward to the challenges that await me next year.

This year I challenged myself to be a good role model. I have achieved this by recruiting year 7s for roving reporters and playing inline hockey. This year I took part in cafe culture, Otago maths and various ICAS tests which helped me improve my problem solving skills. I also took part in camp with my class and represented the school in our drama studio at the info evening.

I have improved in maths and upon finishing up my last year at Berkley, the highlight is being able to play in A-grade, above my age group, in inline Hockey.

“We care, we share, we dare.” Throughout my time at Berkley I have attempted to fulfil these three criteria; By participating in cafe culture, Otago Math, Camp and Te Reo.
IT and Media is a passion of mine which opened doors to many extracurricular opportunities. This year I have continued as a Roving Reporter and am part of the Management Team. I was able to go on numerous field trips, for example I went to Aongatete Lodge to film with mish mash TV. Another IT related opportunity I participated in is being sound technician for our team focus.
I have also excelled academically in math and writing. Now, I have found myself enjoying writing a lot more than previous school years thanks to learning new creative skills and completing fun writing exercises.

I have enjoyed being a Berkley student and think that the school has thoroughly prepared me for what lies ahead.

This year I have taken up many challenges, firstly I have learnt piano, started inline hockey, participated in lunch time promotions and gone to camp. On the academic side of things, I have been apart of the roving reporters team, trialled for the spelling bee, had a speaking role in focus and participated in Otago maths.
Some challenges this year have been maths, because at my old school we didn’t learn the things we’ve learnt this year. Cross country was also a challenge because I had to race against a lot more people than I’m used too. So far I have become better at math, and I think doing math at Berkley has helped me significantly. Another challenge is trying not to talk when I’m not meant to, I have tried to overcome and, although I have improved, I’m not quite where I want to be.
I have improved at reading and writing over the year. Highlights this year have been getting into the 200m semis, being in the ‘A’ grade hockey team, making new friends and coming 39th in cross country.
I have enjoyed my time as a year seven at Berkley and I’m looking forward to being a year eight and enjoying everything that 2015 has to offer.

Speeches

Good morning,

The Waikato inter-intermediate speech contest is fast approaching. There is not a lot of time until this event; it is on Tuesday 20th October, with entries due on Tuesday 13th October. This is slightly difficult given that it is only the 2nd day of term 4! As a school, we are able to enter just one student.

Even though we are not planning on doing speeches until later in term 4, I know many of you are very motivated and will want a chance to enter. My suggestion is to use the holidays to choose a topic you are passionate about and write/practice your speech.

As a class or team we will hear the speeches the first day back, then on Tuesday, in the Tumuaki block, Mrs Foster and/or Mrs Hogg will hear the finalists.

There is no set topic and the time limit is three minutes.

Our class is always noisy and full of discussions and a large majority of you are excellent at speaking- This is your chance to talk uninterrupted for 3 whole minutes and be praised for it!
For those of you who don't like talking in front of an audience, this is your chance to be a Risk-Taker and take up the challenge!

I hope to see a lot of you demonstrating your PYP attitudes of confidence and showing you learner profiles risk-taker and communicator by taking up this challenge!

Below are some examples of speeches, some are live, some are recorded. Watch them and answer the following questions/think about your answers when creating your own speech:
What do they all have in common? What is the speaker doing? What is their purpose and how are they meeting this? How are they expressing themselves and what are they expressing?  How do they make you want to listen?

Some tips/success criteria for an effective speech:
  • Choose a topic you are passionate about.
  • Choose a topic in which you want to change the audience's mind or persuade them of something.
  • Think about issues/conflicts that are prevalent today. e.g. stuff that is happening at school, the environment, technology,  equality, education, refugees, flag change, working conditions overseas, obesity,  children playing video games rather than playing outside, privileges living in NZ, education is a privilege, cars/driving etc
  • Do your research. Research your topic. Read articles. Research statistics. Research how to deliver a speech.
  • Use quotes- Quote someone famous and relate it to your speech.
  • Engage with the audience- Ask them questions, use props- equipment, presentations, powerful photos/art etc
  • Your voice is a tool- use it! Use the volume, tone, pitch etc to help meet your purpose
  • Do something with your body- don't just stand there. Use hand gestures, move around, engage with your props.
  • Look at the audience- stop and look at some people in the eyes, cast your eyes around and make the whole audience feel involved.
  • Practice, practice, practice!
  • How to make a good speechHow to write a speech

Expression of ideas through images

Here are a group of images I came across on https://www.facebook.com/mrtintumon/photos/pcb.10153818186298676/10153818184788676/?type=1&theater. I think there are some strong messages being expressed. What do you think?
Choose one and write a comment; What is the idea/message/emotion the creator is trying to get across? How do you know? Do you think this is an important message today? Why/Why not?
