Sexuality Road

We are now approaching the last week or so of sexuality road. We have completed lessons 1-5 and this week (and early next week) we are looking at completing lessons 6-11

Here are the outlines of these last lessons. These will also come home in the Agenda book.

Lesson 6 – Relationships

LESSON CONTENT:

Learners will:

1. Recap desirable qualities in friendships and relationships.

2. Identify types of non-sexual activities to do when with boy/girlfriends.

3. Identify the types of activities that can be engaged in when in a romantic relationship.

4. Discuss the discrimination experienced by people who are same-sex attracted.

5. Increase acceptance of diversity in relationships.

6. Begin to identify ways that we can challenge negative or derogatory terms used as put downs.

7. Explore the difficulties that people experience when in a relationship that others do not support or

approve of.

IMPORTANT MESSAGES:

• There are lots of ways to be in romantic relationships, and sexual activity is not compulsory.

• Good friends and good boy/girlfriends have similar qualities.

• We are all unique and different.

• If we feel pressure to do something we are unsure about, it is OK to say ‘NO’ until we are in a position

to make our own informed decision.

• Difference is positive and should be respected. We learn from those who live differently to ourselves.

• Feeling different and being in a minority can sometimes lead to isolation and low self-esteem and it Is

important to have a trusted adult you can talk to.

Lesson 7 – Communication and Decision Making

LESSON CONTENT:

Learners will:

1. Identify the types of activities engaged in when in a romantic relationship.

2. Express themselves clearly and confidently when communicating needs and limits.

3. Explore the difficulties that people experience when in a relationship that others do not support or

approve of.

IMPORTANT MESSAGES:

• Any kind of pressure is unacceptable.

• If we feel pressure to do something we are unsure about, it is OK to say ‘NO’ until we are in a position

to make our own informed decision.

• Resisting pressure is not always easy.

• Being true to ourselves is what matters most.

• Difference is positive and should be respected. We learn from those who live differently to ourselves.

Lesson 8 – Communication and Decision Making

LESSON CONTENT:

Learners will:

1. Explore the ways in which someone can be influenced.

2. Discuss what it means to be ‘ready’ and identify individual priorities/preferences.

3. Look forward to the future and realise the importance of setting boundaries when in relationships.

IMPORTANT MESSAGES:

• Communication can be very complex. It involves more than just words: body language, tone of voice

and our actions

• If someone goes quiet and withdraws from a situation, they are not comfortable.

• Feeling ready will be different for everyone – it is important to be clear about what you consider to

be important in a relationship before you think about being intimate with someone.

• The legal age to have sex in NZ is 16.

Lesson 9 – Reproduction

Learners will:

1. Discuss pregnancy and the ways it can be prevented.

IMPORTANT MESSAGES:

• The legal age of consent in New Zealand is 16.

• People can choose if and when they are ready to have children.

• The most effective way to not have babies is not to have sexual intercourse. Sex is something that

should take place later in a person’s life, when they are physically and emotionally ready.

• Sexually Transmissible Infections exist and are preventable.

• You don’t have to have sex in a relationship.

Lesson 10 – Where Can I Go?

• It is OK to need support. Everyone needs support at various times in their lives and we all deserve to

be supported by others.

• It is important to have support people in our lives that we know and trust.

• Sometimes support people need to go to others for help. It is important in this case that the supporter

asks permission from the person needing support before doing so. (assuming no risk of danger)

• There are many organisations who help and provide confidential support the public.

Lesson 11 – Rounding Up

LESSON CONTENT:

Class Newspaper, Week 2, News Article

Within the pages of a newspaper, the reader will find a wide variety of writing styles. These styles vary depending on the type of information and the purpose of the message. This week each student in Room 20 will be choosing a topic/event/focus and writing a News Article.

News articles cover the basics of current events. They answer the questions: who, what, where, how, and when?

Hard news stories/articles - Term 4 Week 2 List of Possible Stories

The following is a brief summary of the major characteristics of this.

  • Inverted pyramid structure; 5 Ws and H (Who, What, When, Where, Why and How) in lead, other details in descending order of importance
  • Adheres to accepted grammatical conventions
  • Written by reporters
  • Objective, facts-only reporting (No I's)
  • Purpose is to inform
  • can be local, national or international
  • Uses quotes
  • A local news article focuses on what's going on in your neighborhood. An example of a local news story would be an article on a city council meeting or news at Berkley e.g. new principal or news happening at Berkley.
  • A national news article focuses on what's happening in the United States. An example of a national news article would be an article on the U.S. Senate passing a new bill.
  • An international news article focuses on news that's happening outside the United States. A story on an influenza outbreak in Chile would be considered an international news story.

You will need to:

Read several newspaper articles and identify/describe the common conventions of this writing genre.

Create and ask questions in an interview to gather information and detail for a newspaper article.

Write a simple newspaper article with paragraphs to separate the main ideas.

*See the Room 13 page for your task today

Have a Great Weekend!!

Athletics Term 4

RUN, JUMP, THROW!

In PE, we are completing rotations of athletics in order to prepare to compete in our athlete competitions.

Instead of one athletics day, athletic events are run over the first 5 weeks of Term 4. Each day there will be an event at lunchtime for students to compete in should they wish to.
I highly encourage all students to take up the challenge and participate in as many events as they feel comfortable doing.

Below is a rough timetable of events. Please note: If we have one day of rain (or some event) where the events are postponed then the timetable will change.

Students will be kept up to date on the events through the daily informer and agenda.

High jump will take place on a wet lunchtime.

School Newspaper

Extra, extra, read all about it!
Room 20 has decided to create an annual school Newspaper! This term from week 2 onwards we are going to transform our room into a newsroom and develop our very own Berkley Newspaper for 2015. As a class we decided we would like to create a newspaper for the whole school to enjoy, as a memento for the wonderful year 2015 has been. In the newspaper we will include a wide range of writing, from conventional newspaper articles, breaking news, to reviews, horoscopes, comics, interviews, gossip columns and opinion pieces, all centered around Berkley 2015 and the interest of those in our community.
We are still deciding about our end vision in terms of how we will distribute it, who to, and the printing, but as our work develops we will get a clearer idea of the end result.

We would love any ideas for the context- What do you think we should write about? What would you like to read? Are there any major news stories or events we need to cover?
Let us know in the comments below. Also, if anyone has any experience in any areas relating to this or have a news story we could interview them for let us know!

We look forward to sharing our wonderful work with everyone!

Sexuality Road Lesson Two. Friday 16 October

Lesson 2 – Setting The Scene
Continuing On the Road

LESSON CONTENT:
Learners will:
1. Discover what will be covered during the unit and clarify the definition of sexuality education.

IMPORTANT MESSAGES:

• Sexuality education is a lifelong process. Our sexuality encompasses all that we are spiritually,

physically, intellectually and emotionally. It is a natural part of us all and is present from the day we

are born – we often need help to own it and use it in positive ways.

• Puberty is a natural process whereby our bodies change from that of a child to an adult.

• Everybody goes through puberty and it is a natural, normal process.

• Changes at puberty will happen at a different time for everyone.

• As we go through adolescence, our bodies, feelings and emotions change.

• People have a large number of thoughts and opinions when it comes to sexuality. Listening to and

being exposed to a range of opinions helps us to form our own.
